Patients move through terraced spaces
starting at the upper, fully accessible terrace to the lower stepped
terrace. By increasing the interactive experience of each level
the gardens actively support and encourage healing.
Waterfalls separate multi-level
water pools, allowing patients with different impairments to touch
the water without bending over. Interaction with the water benefits
patients with its spiritual healing powers.
The plan integrates benches into
walls allowing patients to sit safely and comfortably on the perimeter.
Benches at the upper level are long and curvilinear, allowing
seating in different social settings.
A symbolic river formed in the pavement
pattern flows through the entire garden, binding the site into
a unified experience.
The lighting design accents key
elements within the garden. Steps and benches are under lit and
trees are up lit to accent their graceful branching patterns.
